Pune: In order to ease the traffic congestion, the Pune city will get a ‘Smart Traffic Management system’ under the Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) in the next 15 days. The project is funded by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and will be commissioned by Pune Smart City.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dinesh Virkar, Chief Knowledge Officer, Pune Smart City said, “The new smart traffic management system will be implemented via Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS). It is being installed at a total of 125 important intersections in the city of Pune and through it, proper and automatic control of traffic will be possible.”

As per information shared by Dinesh Virkar, by reviewing the number of vehicles up to 100 meters at each intersection through bell cameras, an attempt is being made to solve traffic jams by changing the signal system immediately through the controller under Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS).

The Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) has been planned as a corridor by Smart City in collaboration with the Traffic Police and thus all the signals from Karve Statue to Khandojibaba Chowk, Tilak Road, Swargate Seven Loves Chowk to Kawde Chowk Fatimanagar come in one corridor. The signal is synchronized through this controller, so after the green light at one intersection, there is no need to wait for the red light at the next intersection. This helps smoothen the traffic movement. Once this system is fully operational, the burden on the traffic police will also be reduced. In this updated system, a ‘Bluetooth unit is installed at every intersection. This can provide information about traffic speed, classification of vehicles, etc. through reports. This information will be useful to make the signal system more effective.

Shrinivas Kandul, Chief Engineer, PMC Electrical Department said, “The PMC is funding this entire project. A budget of Rs 125 crore is sanctioned for this under which the traffic management system will be implemented at 125 junctions of Pune in next 15 days.”
