Pune to Get State-of-the-Art Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
In a significant boost to Pune’s healthcare infrastructure, BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) are set to establish a cutting-edge 400-bed Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. This dedicated facility will provide advanced cancer care and have an attached postgraduate (PG) institute for medical education.
According to Dr. Eknath Pawar, dean of BJMC and SGH, the hospital will have 400 to 500 beds and an attached PG institute. The funding for this project will be a joint effort, with 60% of the cost covered by the central government and the remaining 40% by the medical education department.
Pune’s growing population and expanding limits have created an urgent need for a dedicated cancer hospital. Currently, patients are forced to travel to Mumbai or other cities for treatment, resulting in delays and financial strain. The upcoming cancer hospital will cater to patients from Pune and surrounding areas, offering specialized care for various types of cancer.
The cancer hospital will provide comprehensive cancer care, including early detection, affordable treatment, and advanced treatment options locally. The attached PG institute will focus on training future oncologists and conducting groundbreaking research in cancer prevention and management. Additionally, the hospital will have a dedicated rehabilitation centre and physiotherapy centre to support patients’ recovery, as well as a hostel facility for patients’ attendants.
The draft proposal for the cancer hospital and PG institute is in its final stage and will be submitted to the district collector on December 2. With the district collector’s assurance of land allocation, this ambitious project is set to become a reality, providing world-class cancer treatment facilities to the people of Pune.
