Pune tops in number of organ donors in Maharashtra in 2023
In 2023, Pune recorded the highest number of organ donors in the state with 58, followed by Mumbai with 49 and Nagpur with 35. The families of three brain-dead people gave their consent to donate their organs in the first week of January alone, demonstrating Pune’s continued dominance in this area this year.
The organs of a 10-year-old boy, who was brain-dead, were donated on Sunday by his family, saving the lives of three children.
An official of the Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said that the boy was pronounced dead at Satara Civil Hospital. His apnea tests, however, had to be performed, and only the Sassoon General Hospital could do them. It was necessary to wait around 12 hours between the two apnea tests. They distributed his organs after the tests showed the doctors that he was brain dead. These organs were only available to children who tested positive for ovulation. Thus, his organs were also sent to other hospitals within the state.
One of the required tests for identifying brain death is the apnea test. The primary goal of apnea testing is to demonstrate that the brainstem does not contain any reflexes related to the respiratory control system during periods of high physiologic stimulation for breathing.
ZTCC Pune serves the following areas: Jalgaon, Dhule, Nashik, Solapur, Kolhapur, Satara, and Sangli. Organ donation has increased annually at Pune ZTCC over the past three years. According to data provided by Pune ZTCC, kidneys are among the most in-demand organs for transplants, with the liver coming in second.
The experts stated that the increase in organ donors is out of proportion to the number of new patients added to the transplant waiting list each year. There are 1,620 patients in the Pune region on the waiting list for kidney transplants, 600 for liver transplants, 45 for heart transplants, and 62 for multi-visceral transplants. Transplanting the stomach, pancreas, small intestine, and occasionally the liver or kidney is known as multi-visceral transplantation.
