Pune: A 25-year-old tourist from Pune district was allegedly beaten to death by four local residents in Bhose village near Mahabaleshwar in Satara district. The shocking incident has led to the arrest of all four accused, with Panchgani Police registering a murder case and launching a detailed investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Akshay Ramesh Jadhav, a resident of Bhigwan in Indapur taluka, Pune district. According to police, Akshay had travelled to Mahabaleshwar with a group of friends and was staying at Atithi Villa Hotel in Bhose village.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the group had consumed alcohol on Wednesday night. As Akshay was reportedly heavily intoxicated, his friends left him to rest in his hotel room while they went to the terrace. Sometime later, Akshay allegedly left the room and wandered towards a nearby residential area.
Police said the accused allegedly suspected that Akshay was attempting to enter or sneak into their house. Acting on this suspicion, they allegedly assaulted him with wooden sticks, stones and fists, causing severe injuries.
When Akshay’s friends noticed he was missing, they searched for him and found a crowd gathered around a spot nearly 200 metres from the hotel. They found Akshay seriously injured and immediately shifted him to a government hospital in Panchgani. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to hospitals in Wai and subsequently Baramati. However, doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Following the incident, Panchgani Police registered a murder case and arrested four accused. Those arrested have been identified as Suryakant Chandrakant Gole (resident of Bhose), Avinash Satish Bhosale (resident of Bavdhan), Rahul Janardan Rajpure (resident of Kanur) and Amol Ganadev Wadkar (resident of Chikhali, Mahabaleshwar).
Police officials said the attack appears to have stemmed from suspicion that the victim had entered the area near the accused’s residence. However, investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including the sequence of events before the assault and the exact circumstances leading to the fatal attack.
Assistant Police Inspector D. G. Pawar of Panchgani Police Station is conducting the investigation. Police are also recording statements from the victim’s friends, local residents and other witnesses to establish the complete sequence of events.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and tourists alike, raising questions about mob violence and the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands instead of informing the police in suspicious situations.
