Pune traffic police have proposed the cancellation of 200 driving licenses
The Pune traffic police have recommended to the Road Transport Office (RTO) that the licenses of 200 individuals, who were charged with ‘drink and drive’ offenses following the Porsche car accident in Kalyani Nagar, be cancelled. Furthermore, they will provide a new list of 800 license holders who were caught driving while intoxicated. To combat ‘drink and drive’ incidents, the police have established 27 fixed checkpoints to monitor offenders and take immediate legal action in the presence of witnesses, as well as through videography and photography, as required by law.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated that the authority to revoke driving licenses rests with the RTO, and they have submitted a letter regarding this matter. He emphasized that their efforts to address driving under the influence of alcohol will persist. “Citizens should not drive while intoxicated; otherwise, they will face consequences from the traffic police,” he added.
The traffic police have introduced breathalyzer tests for individuals driving while intoxicated and have successfully collected fines from those violating the law.
DCP (traffic) Amol Zende emphasized, “We aim to send a clear message to those disregarding the law that the traffic police will not tolerate any rider or driver operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. We are implementing strict measures to prevent citizens from drinking and driving, as it is a serious criminal offense.”
According to the RTO statement, they act in accordance with the law, and the cancellation of a driving license occurs within a timeframe of three to six months. This action is based on the letter provided by the city traffic branch. Deputy RTO S. Bhonsale mentioned, “Once the license is cancelled, we call the driver in for counseling about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and the benefits of safe driving. After the cancellation period is completed, we return the license to them. This type of action is taken regularly based on the recommendations of the traffic police.”
