Pune, March 21, 2026: Residents of Viman Nagar have raised serious safety concerns following the implementation of a one-way traffic scheme in their area, claiming it has increased speeding, wrong-way driving, and congestion at key junctions. Despite a legal notice dated February 5, 2026, requesting a meeting with Traffic Police to discuss the plan, the authorities have reportedly not responded.

The Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, led by convenor Qaneez Sukhrani, has stepped in to coordinate measures to ensure residents’ safety. The forum highlighted that speeding vehicles make it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely, and vehicles attempting left turns struggle to merge into fast-moving traffic. The forum has proposed installing speed breakers at strategic points to control vehicle speed.

Double and triple parking along the stretch from Kailash Market to Datta Mandir has been cited as a major cause of congestion. Although traffic signals were installed at Dorabjee Chowk and Datta Mandir Chowk through coordination with local corporator Aishwarya Pathare, they are frequently switched off, limiting their effectiveness. The signal at Gangapuram Chowk has reportedly been reactivated during peak hours.

In a letter dated February 9, 2026, the forum outlined locations for new speed breakers and requested the removal of incorrectly installed yellow-and-black rubber speed breakers by a private party, as well as repairs of existing ones, in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) norms.

Sukhrani emphasized that the one-way system, implemented without addressing resident concerns, has led to higher vehicle speeds, wrong-way driving, increased accidents, and disruption of normal traffic flow. She warned that the scheme has also caused inconvenience to residents and businesses, forcing circuitous routes and loss of revenue for shops.

The forum continues to push for corrective action, urging the Traffic Police and Pune Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps to make the area safer for residents.
