Residents try to stay cool amidst soaring temperatures in Pune, as day and night temperatures hit record highs, causing widespread discomfort.

Citizens in Pune are facing severe discomfort not only due to high daytime temperatures but also because of unusually warm nights, leading to many sleepless nights. According to medical professionals in the city, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. For instance, the night-time temperature in Wadgaonsheri reached a high of 30.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, a figure that’s exceptionally high even for the peak of summer and surpasses daytime temperatures recorded in some cooler months.

In areas like Lavale and Magarpatta, minimum temperatures were reported between 28 and 29 degrees Celsius, with Lohegaon experiencing a slightly cooler 26.6 degrees. Conversely, daytime temperatures soared above 41 degrees Celsius in several places, complicating efforts to cool down after dark.

Doctors have noted significant impacts on health due to these temperature extremes. “The excessive heat impairs the ability to sleep, causing major discomfort, particularly for those without air conditioning,” explained a family physician.

A diabetologist and sleep medicine expert, added that many patients are suffering from poor sleep quality, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

Moreover, a doctor noted a 50% increase in patients experiencing heat-related symptoms this summer compared to last. “People are reporting digestive issues, burning sensations in their limbs at night, and rashes caused by excessive sweating,” he said.

Weather expert attributes the heightened temperatures to a dry northerly breeze and a high-pressure area over the north-central Arabian Sea. These conditions are not only causing the current heatwave across the Konkan region but also preventing the usual nighttime drop in temperatures.

As the city recorded its highest day temperatures of the season, with Shivajinagar reaching 41.8 degrees Celsius and other areas even higher, residents continue to struggle with the compounded effects of extreme heat both day and night.
