Pune: Since the beginning of August, Pune and the rest of Maharashtra have been experiencing a lack of rainfall. While the dams in the area have enough water to meet Pune’s needs, the overall dry spell can lead to problems for the state in the coming days.

As of Wednesday, Pune district has received 52 mm of rainfall, which is below the normal of 160.5 mm. Similarly, the entire Maharashtra has a rain deficit of 70 per cent, with only 44.70 mm of rainfall compared to the normal 151.20 mm.

Anupam Kashyapi, the Head of the Weather Forecasting Division, tweeted that a low-pressure system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which will initiate a partial revival of the monsoon over Maharashtra. Rainfall activity will gradually increase, especially over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Konkan. There is a chance of thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain from August 18 to 20, leading to a yellow alert.

This break in the monsoon comes at a time when the water situation in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad has improved. The five dams that supply water to the area are either full or over 80 per cent of their capacity. Dams like Khadakwasla and Pawana have already started discharging water as they are nearing their capacity.
