Pune Weather Update: Winter’s Short Stay Ends as Cyclone Fengal Brings Rain and Warmer Nights
Unseasonal rain and soaring temperatures mark the end of Pune’s brief winter, influenced by Cyclone Fengal’s remnants.
Pune’s winter chill has all but vanished as temperatures rise and unseasonal rain disrupts the season. The minimum temperature climbed dramatically, from 9.7°C on November 30 to 21.7°C on Tuesday. Weather experts point to Cyclone Fengal’s influence and a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea as key drivers behind the unusual weather patterns.
Cyclone Fengal’s Impact on Maharashtra
Independent forecaster explained that the remnants of Cyclone Fengal have caused significant atmospheric changes in western Maharashtra. “Moist southeasterly winds, replacing the usual dry northeasterlies, have led to warmer nights and higher humidity,” Modak said. Pune experienced light rain in the middle of the night, further diminishing the cold weather.
Other parts of Maharashtra reported similar anomalies:
• Solapur: Minimum temperature soared to 23.6°C, 7.1° above normal.
• Ahilyanagar: Recorded 22.4°C, a remarkable 10° above the average.
• Sangli: Minimum temperature of 23°C, exceeding the normal by 7.3°.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that a low-pressure area over coastal Karnataka and the east-central Arabian Sea is moving west-northwest. This system is bringing moisture-laden winds into the region, fueling the rise in temperatures.
A Brief Look Ahead
IMD forecasts similar weather conditions in the coming days as the system continues to impact western Maharashtra. Minimum temperatures in Maharashtra and Gujarat now range between 15-20°C, while parts of Telangana, Odisha, Punjab, and Maharashtra are experiencing temperatures 5° or more above normal.
Pune residents are advised to prepare for warm, humid conditions with sporadic rain as the city adjusts to a monsoon-like winter. Experts suggest that significant cooling may only return once the current system dissipates.
