Pune Witnesses A Year Of Shocking Crimes In 2024 

As the year 2024 comes to a close, Pune is left reeling from a series of shocking crimes that have shaken the city to its core. From gruesome murders to hit-and-run accidents, here are 11 cases that made headlines and sparked outrage in Pune.

1. Sharad Mohol Murder: 

Gangster Sharad Mohol was shot dead by members of his own gang near his house in Sutardara, Kothrud area, on January 5. Mohol had several cases, including murder and dacoity, registered against him.

2. ₹4000 Crore Drug Bust:

In February, the Pune crime branch seized ₹4000 crore worth of drugs in several raids conducted at a chemical manufacturing factory in Daund taluka, two godowns in Pune’s Vishrantwadi, and some shops in South Extension, New Delhi.

3. Porsche Accident: 

A speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by a drunk teenager, killed two motorbike-borne software engineers in Kalyani Nagar on May 19. The accused was granted bail, sparking widespread outrage.

4. Bopdev Ghat Gang Rape: 

A 21-year-old event management student from Gujarat was gang-raped by three men at Bopdev Ghat area on October 4. The accused also threatened and robbed the survivor.

5. Man Puts Lock On Wife’s Genitals:

In May, a 30-year-old security guard was arrested for allegedly cutting two holes on his wife’s genitals and attaching a padlock on her private parts.

6. Vanraj Andekar Murder:

Former Pune Municipal Corporation corporator Vanraj Surayakant Andekar was shot dead in the Nana Peth area in September. His sister and brother-in-law were arrested in connection with the murder.

7. Rape and Murder of Minor Sisters: 

A 54-year-old man was arrested in December for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing two minor sisters, aged 8 and 9.

8. Koregaon Park Hit-and-Run: 

A 21-year-old food delivery person was killed in a hit-and-run accident by a speeding Audi in Koregaon Park. The driver, Ayush Pradeep Tayal, was detained by police.

9. Pashan Road Influencer Beating:

A woman rider was violently assaulted by an elderly man in front of her kids on Baner-Pashan Link Road in an alleged road rage incident.

10. Wagholi Dumper Accident: 

A speeding dumper crushed nine individuals sleeping on the footpath in Wagholi, killing three people, including two children and their uncle. The driver was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the accident.
