Over 83,000 visitors rode the train last year; cake-cutting event marks platinum jubilee

Pune, April 8, 2025: Pune’s beloved miniature train ‘Phulrani’, a cherished attraction for generations, completed 70 years of service at Peshwe Park today. To commemorate the occasion, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Garden Department organized a special celebration marked by a cake-cutting ceremony and enthusiastic participation from children and families.

Inaugurated on April 8, 1956, Phulrani holds a unique place in Pune’s cultural landscape. Interestingly, the toy train was flagged off not by a dignitary, but by 4.5-year-old Vasundhara Dange—an unconventional beginning that highlighted the child-centric vision of the park. The event was attended by renowned social reformer Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, reinforcing the importance of creating spaces for children.

Originally a diesel-engine miniature train, Phulrani has evolved with time. It now operates as a battery-powered open-air ride with three coaches, offering scenic trips around Peshwe Park. The train remains a nostalgic symbol for Puneites, drawing thousands each year.

“This year alone, over 83,000 visitors enjoyed the Phulrani ride, contributing approximately ₹12.41 lakh in revenue,” said Ashok Ghorpade, Superintendent of PMC’s Garden Department, who oversaw the 70th anniversary celebrations.

Phulrani’s journey also mirrors the development of Peshwe Park itself. In 2002, the Maharashtra Energy Development Authority (MEDA) briefly took over the park to establish an energy park, converting the train to solar power. PMC regained control in 2009, and by 2012, Phulrani was upgraded with a new engine and bogies, running on battery power ever since.

The toy train is not just a ride but a memory lane for many. Renowned personalities like actress Sonali Kulkarni, actor Shrikar Pitre, and actress Ketaki Kadam shared fond memories of Phulrani, lauding Pune for preserving such a timeless childhood treasure.

With the summer holidays bringing in larger crowds, Phulrani continues to enchant both children and adults—proving that even after 70 years, the magic of a toy train ride is simply timeless.
