Pune: The escalating use of private vehicles within the city has inevitably led to a surge in pollution levels. Historically, inadequate public transportation options in Pune compelled citizens to rely heavily on private vehicles.

The pressing issue of pollution in Pune has triggered a pivotal shift towards embracing e-vehicles as an alternative to conventional petrol and diesel-powered modes of transport. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken active steps to champion this cause.

Notably, an initiative was launched to disburse funds for e-rickshaws in Pune, with the presence of esteemed figures such as Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil, Additional Commissioner of PMC Ravindra Binwade, Vikas Dhakane, and Nitin Shinde from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board recently.

Vikas Dhakane, Additional Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), shared insights with Pune Pulse, stating, “Pune’s population has now swelled to nearly 70 lakhs, while registered vehicles have surged to 55 lakhs. We are ardently advocating the utilization of e-vehicles and ensuring the proliferation of charging stations across the city. The introduction of comprehensive public transport options like metro, buses, and auto-rickshaws aims to curtail personal vehicle usage and subsequently alleviate pollution levels.”

Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil underlined the ongoing progress of the metro’s second phase, anticipating a substantial increase in passenger numbers upon completion. In light of this, the promotion of e-rickshaws and CNG rickshaws will play a pivotal role in facilitating convenient access to metro stations, thereby contributing to a reduction in pollution levels within the city.
