Congress leader backs Mamata Banerjee’s claims, says over 100 seats in Bengal were ‘stolen’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday stirred a political storm after alleging that the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam were “stolen” by the BJP with the support of the Election Commission of India.

In a post on X following the election results, Gandhi said his party agrees with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s claims that more than 100 seats in West Bengal were “stolen”. He described both Assam and Bengal polls as “clear cases” of electoral manipulation.

“We agree with Mamata (Banerjee) ji. More than 100 seats were stolen in Bengal,” Gandhi said, adding, “We have seen this playbook before: Madhya Pradesh. Haryana. Maharashtra. Lok Sabha 2024 etc.”

In a sharp remark in Hindi, he further said, “Chunav chori, sanstha chori — ab aur chara hi kya hai!” indicating what he described as a pattern of institutional compromise.

Gandhi’s comments came soon after Mamata Banerjee termed the BJP’s victory in West Bengal “immoral” and alleged that the mandate in over 100 seats had been “looted”. Despite the setback, Banerjee asserted that her party would “bounce back”.

While raising concerns over the electoral process, Gandhi also acknowledged the outcome and signalled that the Congress would continue working in the interest of the people. In a separate message, he said the mandate reflects the voice of citizens and should not be ignored.

The results of the Assembly elections in both states have reshaped the political landscape, with the BJP securing significant victories, while opposition parties question the integrity of the process and call for greater transparency.
