Pune: In blatant disregard of Bombay High Court orders, unauthorized hoardings have been installed across Pune city and its suburbs, congratulating newly elected MLAs. Despite warnings from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) against such activities, there appears to be no substantial action against this rampant violation, raising questions about the administration’s intent.

The MahaYuti alliance achieved unprecedented success in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 18 of 21 constituencies in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding districts. This triumph led party workers to celebrate by putting up congratulatory banners and hoardings for victorious candidates. Notably, BJP and Ajit Pawar’s NCP candidates won seven of eight Assembly seats in Pune city alone.

Ignoring Court Orders and Public Safety

The Bombay High Court had previously directed municipal corporations to ensure that unauthorized banners, posters, and hoardings were not displayed in public spaces. In line with this, PMC’s Sky Sign and Encroachment Department had issued circulars warning of strict action against violators. However, these warnings have been ignored as celebratory hoardings mushroom across the city, defacing its landscape.

These hoardings, often mounted on precarious wooden structures, pose safety risks to pedestrians and drivers. Additionally, many obstruct traffic signals, further exacerbating road safety concerns. Despite the hazards, PMC officials appear reluctant to act, with allegations of political pressure influencing their inaction.

Citizens Call Out Administrative Apathy

Civic activists have condemned the PMC’s lack of enforcement. Citizens criticized the administration and police for their inaction, accusing them of merely being spectators. “The PMC should file criminal cases against those named on these hoardings and submit this information to the High Court. However, political interference ensures no action is taken,” said a resident.

The situation reflects poorly on the PMC’s commitment to upholding the court’s directives and maintaining urban aesthetics. With widespread public frustration, citizens demand immediate and impartial enforcement of the law to restore order and safety in Pune’s streets.
