Royal Enfield Enters Electric Era with New Sub-Brand ‘Flying Flea’
Heritage motorcycle brand dives into the EV market with lightweight, urban-friendly electric models slated for 2026
In a significant move, Royal Enfield has introduced Flying Flea, a new electric motorcycle sub-brand, marking a bold step into the electric vehicle (EV) market. This marks the first time the iconic motorcycle brand has ventured into creating a separate sub-brand. The Flying Flea line will focus on lightweight, electric motorcycles tailored for urban commuting, with an expected launch in 2026.
The Flying Flea sub-brand will offer lightweight electric motorcycles designed for city commutes and short excursions. The brand’s “urban plus” range concept promises an efficient, eco-friendly ride, with a range of about 100 km per charge, ideal for everyday use. Royal Enfield plans to keep the weight of these bikes under 120kg, utilizing materials like aluminum and plastic to ensure durability while maintaining a light build.
Flying Flea motorcycles will follow an alphanumeric naming system, with each bike categorized by style and performance. The first model, the FF-C6, will be a classic-style motorcycle, while the FF-S6 will have a scrambler design. The naming system, where “C” stands for Classic and “S” for Scrambler, also indicates the positioning of the model in terms of price and performance, with lower numbers denoting entry-level models and higher numbers representing more premium offerings.
While Flying Flea will exclusively feature lightweight electric motorcycles, Royal Enfield will continue to produce larger, heavier electric motorcycles under its main brand, such as the anticipated electric Himalayan. The Flying Flea models are designed to be an “add-on” purchase for those seeking a fun and eco-friendly alternative for urban riding, rather than a primary bike for long-distance touring.
Royal Enfield has committed over Rs 1,500 crore to its electric vehicle division, recruiting over 200 engineers across India and the UK for the development of Flying Flea motorcycles. The company’s investment in research and development reflects its determination to offer sustainable, stylish alternatives to conventional petrol-powered bikes, while maintaining the essence of its iconic motorcycle designs.
The Flying Flea is inspired by the original Royal Enfield Flying Flea model, which was a small, lightweight motorcycle built for military use during World War II. The new sub-brand draws on this legacy while aiming to modernize it for the next generation of riders.
Royal Enfield’s Flying Flea sub-brand will launch its first motorcycle, the C6, in 2026, with the S6 following shortly thereafter. While the brand’s new electric lineup won’t hit the roads for a few years, the introduction of Flying Flea signals the company’s vision for the future of urban, eco-friendly motorcycling. Fans and motorcycle enthusiasts will be eager to see how the new electric models are received when they debut in the coming years.
