Taking your phone to the toilet and spending extra time scrolling might seem like a harmless habit, but health experts are warning against it. Apart from exposing your phone to harmful bacteria, prolonged sitting in the toilet can also put your health at risk.

Dr. Joseph Salhab, a leading gastroenterologist based in Florida, explained that spending too much time in the restroom, whether due to constipation or distractions like mobile phone use, can increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids.

“Prolonged sitting when you’re trying to use the restroom puts you at risk for developing hemorrhoids, which can be painful and bleed,” Dr. Salhab said.

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anal or rectal area. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). Both types can cause discomfort, itching, bleeding, and in some cases, severe pain.

According to experts, sitting for longer than necessary puts extra pressure on the rectal veins, making hemorrhoids more likely. The problem has become more common as people increasingly carry their smartphones into the restroom and lose track of time while scrolling.

How to reduce the risk:

  • Limit the time spent on the toilet.
  • Use the restroom only when you feel the urge to go.
  • Avoid delaying or forcing bowel movements.
  • Maintain a healthy diet rich in fiber to prevent constipation.

Doctors advise keeping bathroom time short and focused to protect both hygiene and long-term health.
