Surat, Gujarat – Tragedy struck the Sachin area of Surat on Saturday as a multi-storeyed building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of seven people. Rescue operations have been underway for over 12 hours as more individuals are feared to be trapped under the rubble.

The collapse occurred around 3 PM amid heavy rains that have lashed the region for several days. Immediate rescue efforts by local police and fire brigades were supplemented by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The fire department is also actively involved in the ongoing operations.

Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, who is overseeing the rescue efforts, reported that seven bodies have been recovered so far. Rescue teams initially heard voices from those trapped, raising hopes of finding survivors. A woman was successfully rescued shortly after the collapse, and the bodies of three individuals were recovered by nightfall.

The building, constructed between 2016 and 2017, housed 30 flats, of which only four to five were occupied at the time of the incident. Many residents were reportedly at work, while those sleeping inside the building became trapped under the debris.

This incident follows another building collapse in Gujarat earlier this year. In March, four workers were injured, and one was trapped for seven hours after a section of an under-construction medical college building in Morbi town collapsed.

Rescue efforts in Surat are continuing as authorities strive to locate and save any remaining survivors trapped under the debris.
