‘Sonam Bewafa Hai’ from Viral ₹10 Note Turns Real: Wife Accused in Haseen Dilruba-Style Honeymoon Murder Plot
What started years ago as a meme on a ₹10 note—“Sonam bewafa hai”—has now taken on a hauntingly real twist. Sonam Raghuvanshi, a 25-year-old newlywed from Indore, has been arrested in a spine-chilling case of alleged betrayal and murder during her honeymoon in Meghalaya. Police claim she conspired with her lover to kill her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, in a plot that mirrors a Bollywood thriller.
Honeymoon Turns into a Crime Scene
Sonam and Raja had travelled to Meghalaya in late May to celebrate their honeymoon. On May 23, the couple was reported missing after visiting the picturesque Wei Sawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills. Ten days later, Raja’s decomposed body was found at the bottom of a 1,000-foot gorge.
Initial assumptions of a tragic accident soon shifted when police uncovered suspicious links between Sonam and a man named Raj Singh Kushwaha.
Lover, Lies and a Murder Plot
According to officials, Sonam was involved in an extramarital affair with Kushwaha, a former employee of her brother. Together with three other men, they allegedly plotted Raja’s murder. The plan was to push him off a cliff during a hike, and pass it off as a freak accident.
The conspiracy spanned multiple states, with arrests made in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. One of the five suspects is still on the run.
Arrested at a Dhaba
On June 9, Sonam was finally tracked down at a roadside dhaba along the Varanasi–Ghazipur highway. Tired, barefoot, and reportedly nervous, she asked the dhaba owner for a phone to call her brother—claiming her husband died while saving her. Police arrived soon after and took her into custody.
She has since been handed over to the Meghalaya police and will be taken to Shillong for further questioning.
Shades of ‘Haseen Dilruba’
The murder case has drawn uncanny comparisons to the 2021 film Haseen Dilruba, where a newlywed woman is suspected of killing her husband while hiding a relationship with her lover. From a scenic setting to a secret affair and a planned death, the reel-to-real similarity has gripped the public imagination.
Families Speak Out
Raja’s grieving family is demanding justice. His mother has called the marriage “a trap” and wants the death penalty for those involved.
Meanwhile, Sonam’s father insists she is being framed and has demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Authorities are now analyzing phone records, messages, and other digital clues to build the timeline of events. More arrests could follow as police continue their pursuit of the absconding accused.
