Srinagar-Delhi Flight Fares Skyrocket to ₹65,000 After Terror Attack, Drop After Government Steps In

Following the terror attack in Pahalgam that left over 26 dead, panic among tourists trying to leave Kashmir triggered a massive surge in airfares. Flights from Srinagar to Delhi soared as high as ₹65,000 for a one-way ticket, with layovers, as highways were blocked and airports became overcrowded.
Social media was flooded with screenshots showing fares between ₹25,000 and ₹65,000 on the Srinagar–Delhi route 4 to 6 times the normal rate. One traveler even highlighted a fare to Kolkata priced at ₹40,000. Accusations of profiteering during a crisis drew widespread criticism, prompting swift government intervention.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation directed airlines to cap fares at regular levels and operate additional flights to ease the rush. Airlines have since slashed prices to around ₹14,000 and waived cancellation and rescheduling fees. Currently, only two regular flights Air India Express and IndiGo are operating, with four more special flights to Delhi and Mumbai scheduled.
Airlines have also been instructed to assist in the transportation of the deceased and coordinate with local authorities. Air India and IndiGo have added flights and offered full refunds or free rescheduling for passengers booked until April 30.
The government has emphasized that airlines must not exploit the situation and must prioritize the safe and affordable return of stranded tourists.
