Indian Railways is working on launching, user-friendly ‘Super-App’ to make things easier for passengers.

What is a Super-App?

A super-app is an application that provides end users (customers, partners or employees) with a set of core features plus access to independently created mini apps.

Superapps run on a platform that provides numerous, commonly used app services, such as messaging and payment. Super App users can create personalized user experiences (UXs) by selecting and installing their chosen mini apps (focused on performing a single task).

This Railway Super-App, created by CRIS, the IT arm of Indian Railways, will merge several existing railway apps like IRCTC Rail Connect and IRCTC eCatering Food on Track. It aims to simplify ticketing, train tracking, and other services that are currently spread across different apps.

The consolidated app will incorporate features from existing applications such as Rail Madad, UTS, and the National Train Enquiry System. This initiative seeks to streamline the passenger experience by providing a centralized platform for various railway services.

The goal is to enhance user experience, improve synergy, and explore monetisation opportunities for the existing services.

Developing and operating the super app for the national transporter is estimated to cost around Rs 90 crore over three years. Among the existing railway apps, IRCTC Rail Connect stands out with over 100 million downloads, playing a vital role in reserved category ticket bookings. UTS, with over 10 million downloads, focuses on platform tickets and season passes.

In the fiscal year 2023, Rail Connect facilitated 5,60,000 train ticket bookings, accounting for nearly half of the total tickets sold by IRCTC. This shift towards a unified super app is a significant move in the digitization of Indian Railways, aiming to provide passengers with a simpler and more efficient travel experience.
