The Supreme Court has issued a significant directive stating that the pending local body elections in Maharashtra must be conducted within the next four months.

On Tuesday, May 6, the court gave an interim order directing the state to proceed with the elections for local self-government bodies. This decision clears the way for the long-delayed elections in major municipal corporations and councils, including those in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur.

The court’s bench instructed that the election notification must be issued within four weeks, and the entire election process should be completed within four months thereafter.

Issue the election notification for local self-government bodies within four weeks and conduct elections within four months.

Conduct the elections as per the OBC reservation status that existed between 1994 and 2022.

The state government and the State Election Commission must act within the stipulated timeframe.

The petitioners had claimed that OBC seats were reduced, to which the court responded that the pre-2022 reservation status will be maintained.
