Maharashtra Extends Toll Waiver for Electric Vehicles to Bandra-Worli Sea Link
The Maharashtra government has extended toll exemptions for EVs to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link under the 2025 EV policy, aiming to boost green mobility and reduce travel costs.
Mumbai: In a major push for green transportation, the Maharashtra government has extended toll exemptions for electric vehicles (EVs) to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). This development is part of the recently approved Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025, which seeks to promote sustainable mobility across the state.
The BWSL, one of Mumbai’s busiest routes, accommodates nearly 60,000 vehicles daily, with EVs accounting for approximately 8% of the traffic. Currently, toll rates on the sea link are ₹100 for cars and jeeps, ₹160 for buses, and ₹210 for commercial vehicles. With the toll waiver in place, EV users will benefit from considerable cost savings.
A senior transport department official confirmed that the toll exemption for the BWSL has received in-principle approval. “After extending toll waivers on the Samruddhi Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Atal Setu, there was significant public demand to include the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The proposal has been cleared, and a formal announcement is expected soon,” the official said.
The state government estimates the toll exemption scheme will cost around ₹3,000 crore over the next five years. This expense will be absorbed entirely by the state, underlining its commitment to faster EV adoption and the development of an eco-friendly transport ecosystem.
Approved by the state cabinet on April 29, the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 offers several incentives, including purchase subsidies for EVs, a complete waiver on motor vehicle tax, and full toll exemptions on key routes. A high-level steering committee led by the chief secretary will be formed to oversee policy execution and finalise exemption guidelines.
Additionally, EVs traveling on roads managed by the Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be eligible for a 50% toll discount.
