Those little indentations on our cheeks appear when we smile and are often seen as a sign of attractiveness. Dimples are linked to beauty and, at times, even to good fortune. So, let’s explore what makes dimples so unique.

Dimples are created by the arrangement of facial muscles, especially the zygomaticus major muscle. This muscle is responsible for lifting the corners of the mouth when we smile. Individuals with dimples have this muscle split into two sections, known as bifid zygomaticus major. One section connects to the mouth’s corner, while the other attaches to the skin. When we move our face, this muscle pulls the skin inward, resulting in dimples.

The genetic basis for dimples is often seen as a dominant trait. This implies that if one parent has dimples, their children may also inherit them. However, this isn’t guaranteed. Some kids may develop dimples over time, while others might be born with them only for them to fade later. The great thing is that dimples do not have any adverse health effects.

Dimples are often viewed positively. In the United States, they can symbolize good luck. In China, dimples have been seen as attractive and lucky for many centuries. There is a belief that families with dimples bring joy. Similarly, in various Asian cultures, dimples have been associated with beauty since the medieval era.

From a mental viewpoint, dimples enhance the appeal and cuteness of facial expressions. They lead others to see the person as more approachable and social. Research indicates that characteristics like dimples contribute to a more expressive face, which is associated with liveliness and sociability.

The appeal of dimples is so powerful that some individuals opt for surgery to get them. A cosmetic procedure known as dimpleplasty is used to create these artificial dimples. This demonstrates that in certain cultures, dimples are greatly cherished and regarded as symbols of beauty and charm.
