A total of 141 opposition members of parliament have been suspended from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for the first time ever during the current winter session of Parliament. 49 more MPs have been suspended on Tuesday (December 19) for misbehaving and disobeying instructions.
As per information, the number has reached 141 when the new suspensions were added to the 92 suspensions that had already occurred. The first person to be suspended last week was Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, who had a face-off with Rajya Sabha Chairman and Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Regarding the December 13 Lok Sabha security breach, the opposition MPs have been requesting an official statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 49 MPs have been recently suspended following a significant agitation in Parliament during the day that resulted in three adjournments of the houses. The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, NCP leader Supriya Sule, and Congress veterans Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tiwari, and Karti Chidambaram are among the MPs suspended on Tuesday.
Reacting to her suspension, NCP MP Supriya Sule has taken it to X, “Today, the BJP government suspended another 49 MPs, totalling 141 MPs, including myself for merely demanding a discussion, be it on the security breach or the surge in onion prices! It seems that apart from evading responsibility for serious issues that the country is facing, the blanket suspension is to ensure the smooth passing of the Orwellian bills in the list of business for today and tomorrow:
- Press and registration of periodicals Bill 2023 – Impeaches the freedom of press, speech, and expression.
- Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Bill 2023 – Tramples on the independence of the election commission and puts it under the thumb of the Central Government.
- Telecommunication Bill 2023 – Gives central government the discretion to suspend telecom services, and tap phones in the interest of ‘public safety’.
- Criminal Law Amendments – Overcriminalization and dilution of safeguards to establish police control over the citizenry.
We shall stand strong against the assault by the BJP Government on the constitutional fabric of our country.”
