A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Govindpuram locality of Ghaziabad, where siblings Anjali Singh (25) and her elder brother Avinash Kumar Singh (28), an Intelligence Bureau officer, died by suicide at their residence on the evening of July 31. The two were discovered unresponsive in a locked room by their biological mother. A pungent odor—suspected to be from a poisonous substance like sulfos—was detected at the scene. Despite immediate efforts to revive them, both were declared dead at a local hospital. A 22-page suicide note, written by Anjali and addressed to family members and close associates, was later recovered from the siblings’ room.

The note places direct blame for their deaths on their father, Sukhveer Singh, and stepmother, Ritu Singh, alleging years of emotional abuse, neglect, and mental harassment since the passing of their biological mother. “No one but Miss Ritu and Mr. Sukhveer Singh are responsible for our deaths,” Anjali wrote. She detailed how their home life became emotionally unbearable, citing lack of love, constant pressure, and a toxic environment. The note also reflects their deep sense of isolation and betrayal, especially after their father allegedly tried to force Anjali into an arranged marriage, which she opposed. In the note, Anjali clearly states that neither her father nor stepmother should be allowed near their bodies or participate in their last rites. Instead, she names her close friend Mahim—a graphic designer and her business partner—as the only person she trusted to conduct the cremation.

She added: “Mahim, everything is yours now… I want to give you something — take all the money in my account. It’s a small token of my appreciation.” Bank details, insurance policy instructions, and final asset distributions were also mentioned in the diary. Several pages of the note were reportedly shared via WhatsApp with family members, including their father, stepmother, uncle Anil Singh, and aunt Rekha Rani.

According to the post-mortem report, both siblings ingested poison. Anjali reportedly passed away approximately 14 minutes before her brother. There were no signs of physical injury, confirming ingestion of a toxic substance as the cause of death. Anjali’s writings also reveal that her stepmother frequently questioned her character, while her father stood by silently. “Papa, being a father isn’t just about paying school fees. It means spending time with your children and understanding them,” she wrote. “You have no right to touch my dead body. For your second marriage, you crushed your children’s happiness.”

Following the discovery of the note, the siblings’ maternal uncle, Devender Singh, filed a formal police complaint against Sukhveer Singh and Ritu Singh, accusing them of abetment to suicide. He also claimed that 18 years ago, his sister Kamlesh—the siblings’ mother and Sukhveer’s first wife—had died by suicide after allegedly consuming poison, supposedly after discovering her husband’s affair with Ritu. Devender further alleged that Sukhveer remarried just months after Kamlesh’s death.

According to police, both Sukhveer, an employee at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and Ritu were at work when the incident occurred. Around 5 p.m., Ritu returned home and tried calling Anjali and Avinash on their mobile phones. Hearing the phones ring inside the room but getting no response, she panicked. Her screams drew the attention of neighbors, who broke down the door and found the siblings unconscious. They were rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. ACP Bhaskar Verma confirmed that the hospital notified the police shortly after, and the bodies were sent for autopsy.

The post-mortem confirmed poisoning as the cause of death. Although police initially claimed no suicide note was found, a later search led to the recovery of Anjali’s diary, which clearly outlined who the siblings held responsible. “A suicide note has been recovered. The deceased have made serious allegations and clearly mentioned who they hold responsible. A formal investigation is underway, and appropriate legal action will be taken,” said a senior police official.
