In a devastating incident on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway early Tuesday, a 44-year-old bus passenger lost his life after being crushed between a halted private bus and a speeding tempo. The tragic sequence unfolded near the Bhatan Tunnel, an area where pedestrian activity is strictly banned.

The deceased, Anil Nashram Pawar, a resident of Kokisare village in Patan, had been traveling in a private bus en route to Badlapur. According to officials from Rasayani police station, the incident began when an unidentified pedestrian suddenly attempted to cross the high-speed expressway — a move both dangerous and illegal. In an effort to avoid a collision, the bus driver applied the brakes sharply, which reportedly caused the vehicle’s rear tyres to burst.

Forced to pull over to the roadside, the driver and cleaner began repairing the damage. Meanwhile, Pawar stepped out of the bus, possibly out of concern or curiosity, to assess the situation for himself.

Tragically, just moments later, a pick-up tempo (registration number MH-46 CL 2496) came hurtling down the expressway and slammed into the back of the stationary bus. The impact was so severe that Pawar, caught between the two vehicles, suffered catastrophic injuries to his waist and legs. He died on the spot.

Authorities have confirmed that both the pedestrian’s reckless crossing and the tempo driver’s alleged rash driving played key roles in the fatal accident. An FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.

“This heartbreaking loss could have been prevented if basic traffic rules were followed,” said a police official. “Crossing an expressway on foot is not only unlawful but extremely hazardous. The consequences, as we’ve seen here, can be deadly.”

Investigations are ongoing, and police have issued a fresh appeal to both drivers and pedestrians to uphold road safety regulations at all times.
