TTD Recommends Renaming Renigunta Airport As 'Sri Venkateswara International Airport'
Tirupati, June 18, 2025 — The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board of trustees has proposed renaming Renigunta Airport to ‘Sri Venkateswara International Airport’, reflecting the spiritual heritage of Tirumala. A formal recommendation will be sent to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, TTD chairman B R Naidu announced on Tuesday.
The proposed revamp also includes aesthetic enhancements to mirror the divine ambiance of the temple town. “The airport will embody the spiritual atmosphere of Tirumala,” said Naidu during a press briefing.
Further initiatives by TTD include plans to construct a Srivari temple in Bengaluru, subject to land allocation from the Karnataka government. In support of green transport, Union Minister for Heavy Industries Kumara Swamy has agreed to provide 100 electric buses for use in Tirumala, which are expected to arrive soon.
In another move, TTD will lease space in Tirupati for establishing a CSIR-certified laboratory to monitor the quality of ghee, water, and food used in temple offerings.
Modernisation efforts are also underway at Sri Venkateswara College in Delhi, which is 73 years old. A panel headed by the TTD chairman will address concerns of 200 contract lecturers before fresh appointments are made.
TTD’s Dharmic wing is launching several religious and social programmes, including:
- Priesthood training for backward communities
- Sadgamaya, a values-based programme for students
- Saubhagyam, a women-centric initiative during Varalakshmi Vratam
- Cultural and spiritual awareness campaigns such as Akshara Govindam, Harikatha Vaibhavam, Sanmargam for prisoners, and Vana-Nidhi to promote ecological balance and devotion in tribal regions.
These efforts, according to TTD, aim to deepen spiritual values while enhancing the infrastructure and outreach of the temple trust.
