Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on Wednesday that there is a need to tighten current laws to address inappropriate content on social media platforms.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the Information and Broadcasting Minister urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee to tackle this issue and emphasized the importance of reaching a consensus to establish stricter regulations.

He noted that in the past, there were editorial reviews to determine the appropriateness of content, but those checks have been removed. Now, while social media serves as a platform for press freedom, it lacks regulation and contains vulgar material, he mentioned during the question hour.

Vaishnaw highlighted the necessity of reinforcing existing laws to combat vulgar content on social media, responding to inquiries from BJP member Arun Govil regarding current measures to prevent the illegal broadcasting of inappropriate content and whether the government plans to implement stricter laws, given that the current regulations are ineffective in preventing misuse of these platforms.
