A Leader Who Built An Iconic Brand

Born on October 4, 1938, into the renowned Singhania family, Vijaypat Singhania played a defining role in shaping Raymond into one of India’s most recognisable and respected textile brands.

During his tenure as Chairman and Managing Director from 1980 to 2000, he transformed the company into a global name synonymous with premium suiting and timeless style. Under his leadership, Raymond expanded beyond textiles into multiple sectors including denim, steel, cement and industrial products.

His vision helped position Indian manufacturing on a global stage while maintaining a strong identity rooted in quality and craftsmanship.

Beyond Business: A Passion For Aviation

Singhania’s achievements were not limited to boardrooms. He was also a passionate aviator who pushed the boundaries of adventure and endurance.

Inspired by pioneers like J. R. D. Tata, he logged over 5,000 hours of flying experience.

In 1988, he completed a remarkable solo microlight flight from London to New Delhi in 23 days, setting a global endurance record. He later won a gold medal at an international air race and achieved one of his most notable feats in 2005, when he flew a hot air balloon to an altitude of nearly 69,000 feet—an achievement that remains unmatched.

Recognition And Contributions

His contributions were widely recognised. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2006 and the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2001. He was also appointed Honorary Air Commodore by the Indian Air Force and served as Sheriff of Mumbai.

Beyond industry and aviation, he contributed to education as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, reflecting his commitment to nurturing future leaders.

A Life Of Achievement And Challenges

While his professional journey was marked by extraordinary success, his later years also saw personal and business conflicts that drew public attention. These chapters reflected the complexities that often accompany legacy-building at such a scale.

A Legacy That Endures

Vijaypat Singhania is survived by his wife Ashadevi and his children, including Gautam Singhania.

His life remains a story of ambition, discipline and passion—from building one of India’s most iconic brands to achieving extraordinary feats in the skies.

He did not just build a company; he built a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
