Water From 138 Locations In Pune Found Unfit For Drinking
Pune: Following an outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the Sinhagad Road area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched a water quality testing drive. Of the 7,195 water samples tested so far, 138 have been found unfit for drinking, prompting the health department to issue a warning.
The contaminated samples include water from Khadakwasla Dam, private wells, RO plants, and tankers. The PMC’s health department has instructed the water supply department to provide clean water in affected areas to prevent waterborne diseases. Tests have revealed the presence of E. coli and coliform bacteria, increasing the risk of outbreaks.
Dr. Neena Borade, PMC’s health chief, emphasized the urgent need to supply clean water in affected areas. Any GBS or diarrhea case reported in the city is now being investigated for its possible link to contaminated drinking water.
Meanwhile, the GBS cases in Maharashtra have reached 224, with 195 confirmed diagnoses. Pune has recorded the highest number of cases, including 46 within PMC limits, 95 in newly merged villages, 33 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, and 36 in rural Pune. Across the state, 26 patients are in intensive care, 15 on ventilators, and 11 have died due to the syndrome.
