A surge in humidity levels has gripped Pune, courtesy of the warm and moist southeasterly winds blowing in from the Bay of Bengal. The relative humidity (RH) levels in several areas of the city have skyrocketed, with some areas recording a whopping 100% RH.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, Lavale and NDA recorded the highest RH levels at 100%, followed by Pashan at 95% and Magarpatta at 93%. Shivajinagar and Koregaon Park also reported high RH levels at 91% and 92%, respectively.

The minimum temperature in the city has also risen over the last few days, with NDA recording the lowest at 18.4°C, followed by Shivajinagar at 19.8°C and Pashan at 19.5°C.

Scientist at IMD, Pune attributed the surge in humidity levels to the persistent flow of southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. “These winds are both moist and warm, leading to elevated humidity levels,” he explained.

The IMD has forecast light rain in several districts of Maharashtra, including Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, and others, on Saturday. While the rainfall may be light and insignificant, it could further increase humidity levels, IMD warned.

However, there is relief on the horizon, with the IMD predicting a dip in minimum temperatures by 2°C to 5°C from Monday. “A fall in minimum temperature is expected after two to three days as the southeasterly wind influence subsides,” he said.

The IMD has also predicted a gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 3°C to 5°C over west India during the next five days.
