Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a gradual rise in minimum temperature in Pune, with mercury levels expected to rise above normal during the Makar Sankranti festivities.

According to the IMD, the minimum temperature in Pune is likely to rise steadily from January 12, reaching 14-15°C by January 12-13 and further increasing to 16°C by January 14-15. This rise in temperature is attributed to a west-moving upper air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin/Laccadive region, which is expected to bring warmer air from the Bay of Bengal.

On Thursday, the minimum temperature in Pune dipped to 10.9°C in Shivajinagar, while Lohegaon recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C. Other parts of Maharashtra also experienced varying temperatures, with Kolhapur recording 16.2°C and Mahabaleshwar marking 11.8°C.

The IMD has predicted a 2-3°C rise in minimum temperatures in Maharashtra over the next two days, while neighboring Gujarat may experience a gradual fall by 2-3°C after the initial rise.

The weather department has also forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at several locations in south peninsular India, although Maharashtra is expected to maintain largely clear skies with haze during the morning hours.

Independent weather forecaster Abhijit Modak explained to the media person that the southerly wind components brought warmer air from the Bay of Bengal, leading to moisture incursion in parts of Maharashtra.
