The family of a man in North Carolina, USA (Philip Paxson), who tragically lost his life in September 2022 after driving his car off a bridge while using Google Maps, is suing the tech giant for wrongful death. They claim Google knew the bridge was going down but didn’t update their navigation system.

Paxson’s mother-in-law has taken it to her Facebook account to express her grievances “Our family suffered a horrible loss Friday on September 30 2022. My son-in-law, Philip Paxson lost his life returning home after celebrating his daughter’s 9th Birthday in Hickory, North Carolina. It was a dark and rainy night and he was following his GPS which led him down a concrete road to a bridge that dropped off into a river. The bridge had been destroyed 9 years ago and never repaired. It lacked any barriers or warning signs to prevent the death of a 47 year old father of two daughters. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. It was a totally preventable accident. We are grieving his death.”

Paxson’s wife, Alicia, has filed a negligence lawsuit against Google’s parent company Alphabet. In the lawsuit, she claims that Paxson was directed by Google Maps to cross the Snow Creek Bridge while driving home from their daughter’s ninth birthday party in an unknown neighbourhood.

In a similar incident, two doctors working at a private hospital at Kodungallur in Thrissur were returning from Kochi when they met with an accident. The Kerala police have now issued a word of caution to people to carefully use the Google Map navigation system during monsoon and avert such mishaps.
