Pune: Sanjiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv, has raised concerns over the excessive time young professionals spend on social media, urging them to focus more on hard work. Speaking at the Asia Economic Dialogue in Pune on Friday, Bajaj remarked that many youngsters spend four to five hours daily on smartphones, which affects their willingness to work.

“Most work requires hard work—there are no easy jobs,” he stated, emphasizing that businesses across sectors are struggling to find skilled manpower. Bajaj stressed the need to enhance India’s talent pool to boost productivity. “Businesses need skilled workers. If they are not available, we can either complain or take action,” he said, calling on the government and corporates to take proactive steps in preparing the youth for the job market.

Discussing evolving employment trends, Bajaj noted that job security is often taken for granted, while employee loyalty now hinges on job satisfaction. This shift, he observed, has led many professionals to explore entrepreneurship and startup opportunities.

He also highlighted changing consumer preferences, pointing out that while young professionals continue to invest in homes and cars, many now prefer renting or using cab services. He suggested that these trends could significantly reshape industries in the coming decade.

On policy-making, Bajaj urged politicians to develop long-term economic strategies with insights from academic experts. Acknowledging the political reality of electoral cycles, he remarked, “Every government ensures progress, but they must also navigate elections and often resort to freebies.”
