17-Year-Old Boy Dies After Drowning At Chinchwad Municipal Swimming Pool; Safety Measures Under Question
Pune: The tragic incident took place at the Vastad Balasaheb Gawade swimming pool in Chinchwad on Friday morning. The teenager had reportedly gone to the pool with friends to learn swimming when the accident occurred.
A 17-year-old boy drowned at a municipal swimming pool in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Friday, triggering concern among local residents and raising questions about safety arrangements at the facility.
The deceased has been identified as Shravan Sameer Gaikwad, a resident of Rahatani in Pimpri-Chinchwad. According to police officials, the incident took place at the Vastad Balasaheb Gawade swimming pool in Chinchwad at around 11 am.
Shravan had reportedly visited the pool with his friends and was learning to swim. After entering the water, his friends noticed that he was not resurfacing and immediately alerted the lifeguards present at the pool.
Lifeguards rushed to search for the teenager and pulled him out of the water in an unconscious condition. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead before treatment could begin.
Chinchwad police said that four lifeguards had been appointed at the swimming pool through contractors. Police have registered an accidental death case and further investigation is underway.
The swimming pool is managed by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
The incident also sparked discussion during the municipal corporation’s general body meeting on Friday. Corporators reportedly questioned the role and response of the lifeguards during the incident and demanded strict action against the concerned contractors and staff if negligence is found.
Some corporators also demanded financial assistance for the victim’s family.
Residents in the area expressed concern over safety standards at public swimming pools, especially during the summer season when large numbers of children and teenagers visit such facilities for swimming lessons.
Police officials said the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning are still being investigated.
