RBI says majority of withdrawn high-value notes have come back; notes remain legal tender

The Reserve Bank of India has said that 98.47 per cent of ₹2000 denomination banknotes that were in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have now been returned to the banking system. This marks a significant milestone in the currency withdrawal process announced by the central bank nearly three years ago.

According to the latest data, the total value of ₹2000 notes in circulation has sharply declined from ₹3.56 lakh crore at the time of the withdrawal announcement to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026. This indicates that only a small fraction of the high-value notes remains with the public.

The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management strategy. Since then, citizens have been given multiple options to return or deposit these notes without disruption.

Even now, individuals can deposit the remaining ₹2000 notes through the RBI’s 19 regional offices across the country. Another option available is sending the notes via India Post to designated RBI issue offices, where the value will be credited directly to the sender’s bank account.

Importantly, the central bank has clarified that ₹2000 banknotes continue to remain legal tender. This means that while they are being gradually withdrawn from active circulation, they are still valid and can be deposited or exchanged through official channels.

The steady return of these notes reflects strong public participation in the transition process. With only a small amount still in circulation, the RBI’s move towards reducing the use of high-value currency appears to be nearing completion.
