10 Items You Cannot Carry in Hand Luggage at Indian Airports
Packing for a flight often means throwing things into your cabin bag at the last minute, but airport security rules in India are strict. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), along with international aviation guidelines, has a list of items that are not allowed in hand baggage for safety reasons.
Here are 10 things you should avoid putting in your cabin bag:
- Sharp Objects
Items like knives, scissors, blades, nail cutters, or metal nail files are strictly prohibited. Pack them in your checked luggage if needed. - Lighters and Matchboxes
These everyday items are considered fire hazards and are banned in cabin baggage. Some airlines don’t allow them in checked luggage either. - Powdered Substances
Talcum powder, protein powder, or other powdered items can interfere with X-ray screening. These should go in checked bags. - E-Cigarettes and Vaping Devices
Completely banned in India, e-cigarettes and vape pens cannot be carried in hand or checked baggage. - Tools and Hardware
Objects like screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and spanners are not allowed in cabin bags as they can be misused as weapons. - Large Aerosol Sprays
Pressurized containers above 100ml, such as deodorants or hair sprays, are not permitted in hand baggage due to safety risks under cabin pressure. - High-Capacity Power Banks (Over 160Wh)
Power banks are allowed only in cabin baggage, but they must not exceed 160Wh. Anything higher will be stopped at security. - Liquids, Gels, and Sprays Over 100ml
The 100ml rule applies strictly. Items like water bottles, perfumes, shampoos, or even ghee must be in containers of 100ml or less, preferably packed in a clear zip-lock bag. - Sports and Fitness Equipment
Dumbbells, resistance bands, cricket bats, hockey sticks, or tennis rackets are not allowed in hand baggage. These must be checked in. - Mercury Thermometers
Mercury is toxic and unsafe in aircraft cabins. Thermometers containing mercury are banned in both hand and checked baggage. Digital thermometers are safe alternatives.
Travel Tip:
Always review your airline’s baggage policies and the latest airport security guidelines before packing. It will help you avoid delays at security and ensure a smoother journey.
