Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra – The festive spirit of Diwali has given way to a massive cleanup operation in Pimpri-Chinchwad, as the city grapples with an overwhelming amount of garbage generated during the celebrations.

The city witnessed a significant surge in waste generation, with an average of 1,400 tonnes of waste collected daily over the four days of Diwali. This is a substantial increase from the daily average of 1,200 tonnes. The additional waste, estimated at 200 tonnes, was primarily boxes, packaging materials, and firecrackers.

The main markets and streets were particularly affected, with vendors setting up temporary stalls for puja materials and other festive items. Once the stalls were dismantled after Padwa, the waste ended up on the roads, adding to the city’s garbage woes.

Waste collection figures revealed a staggering amount of trash. On Vasubaras day, 1,563 tonnes of waste were collected, followed by 1,397 tonnes on October 31, 1,382 tonnes on Lakshmi Puja day, and 1,368 tonnes on Padva day.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is working tirelessly to clear the garbage, collecting waste through Ghantagadi and dumping it at the Moshi waste depot. “We are working diligently to ensure the city returns to normalcy,” said a municipal official. “However, the sheer volume of trash has posed a significant challenge.”
