The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has given the green light to more than 200 building projects, after developers secured alternative water sources for areas beyond 5km of municipal limits. This move comes after Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) expressed their inability to supply water to these areas.

Each application underwent rigorous scrutiny of water source documentation before approval, according to a senior PMRDA official. The authority has taken a stringent approach to water source verification due to water scarcity issues affecting numerous projects in the area.

Developers committed to sourcing water from Pune Zilla Parishad and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, paving the way for PMRDA’s approval. The affected area covers approximately 231 villages.

PMC requires 24 TMC of water but has only been sanctioned 16.36 TMC from Bhama-Askhed and Khadakwasla dams till 2032. PCMC, with a population of 35 lakh, struggles to provide water to its residents, supplying water on alternate days. Both corporations expressed difficulties in providing water outside their jurisdiction.

The PMRDA commissioner emphasized that corporations must provide water to villages within a 5 km radius from their boundaries as per government rules. However, resident Vijay pandey expressed concerns about the reliability of water supply, stating that “there is no clear-cut assurance on the total water supply that will be made available for these projects.”
