19 Students in Maharashtra Hospitalised After Suspected Iron Tablet Overdose
Concern gripped Bhamdeli village in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district after nineteen students from a Zilla Parishad (ZP) school were hospitalised for reportedly consuming an excessive quantity of iron tablets meant for anaemia prevention. Under a government health initiative, students are routinely given iron tablets every Monday. However, officials stated that some children allegedly took additional tablets on Tuesday when teachers were not present to supervise them.
Trouble surfaced on Wednesday night when 19 students began complaining of nausea, dizziness, and feeling “extremely unwell.” Once the situation became clear, the school administration promptly contacted emergency services. Ambulances were arranged, and the students were admitted to the Chandrapur District Hospital for medical treatment.
Ashok Katare, District Health Officer of the Zilla Parishad, confirmed the hospitalisation of all affected students. According to attending doctors, 16 students are currently stable, while three others remain under observation as a precaution. The incident has prompted swift administrative action. ZP Chief Executive Officer Pulkit Singh has ordered a high-level probe to investigate how the students accessed the additional tablets and whether there was any lapse in supervision or protocol.
Officials are continuing to monitor the students’ health closely, while the inquiry aims to determine responsibility and ensure stricter safeguards to prevent such occurrences in the future.
