210 people fined for not wearing masks; PCMC takes stern action shopkeepers littering

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has stepped up its action against shopkeepers violating the health rules. PCMC’s flying squad penalised citizens for violating rules such as spitting in public spaces, not wearing masks, wherein 210 people were fined and Rs 1.6 lakhs in a day from violators.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has formed a 16-member flying squad to take action against citizens flouting pandemic norms and civic rules. The squad named ‘Green Marshal Squad’ is actively working across PCMC’s eight zonal wards.

The squad monitors through CCTV cameras to identify people who are spitting, littering, dumping illegal bio-medical waste and not wearing masks properly.  A penalty of Rs 180 to Rs 5,000 is charged for littering at public places and Rs 500 for not wearing masks. Around 170 people were fined and collected Rs 88,000 for not wearing masks and spitting and around Rs 18,160 was charged for creating public nuisance by green marshal Squad. In 24 hours, 210 citizens were caught red-handed and fined Rs 1.6 lakh.

“In view of the increasing cases of Covid19 public hygiene is a primary concern now. Our main aim is to educate people to avoid making public places filthy. We are planning to increase the green marshal squad’s action. The civic body has intensified its efforts to promote the Swachh Bharat Mission. However, people’s participation is extremely important to make it a success,” said Shashikant more, Health officer, D-ward, PCMC.

“Green Marshal squads are created to sensitise people on Covid appropriate behaviour and prevent the throwing of garbage openly.  PCMC has also decided to fine establishments and people for littering and dumping garbage on vacant plots. This would be done to restore hygienic conditions and the fine amount would range from Rs 500 to Rs 25,000, depending on the amount of garbage dumped,” said Rajesh Patil Commissioner PCMC.

It is the sole responsibility of landowners to ensure proper sanitary conditions at such vacant plots, barring which they would be fined.
