29 gram panchayats in Pune to abolish regressive widow rituals

Over 29 Gram panchayats will abolish the regressive widow rituals in Pune on June 9 at a programme to be held in Dhayari. It will be for the first time that gram panchayats in such a huge number will take the stand of banning such practise.

The members of the Maharashtra Commission for Women have passed a resolution to put an end to the customs enforced upon widows. Now, no one can stop them from wearing bright colours and attending functions. Khadakwasla constituency will be the first to abolish such regressive customs of breaking bangles, removing mangalsutra, wiping off vermillion from widow’s forehead, wearing bright colours and jewellery, etc.

Maharashtra Government and Maharashtra State Women’s Commission had appealed to the Gram panchayats to ban such practices and it received overwhelming response and many Gram panchayats have lifted such practices. Under the guidance of Rupali Chakankar, president, Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has taken the lead and will be holding a programme where 29 Gram Panchayats will be pledging to stop this practise at once. Khadakwasla constituency will be the first to have stopped such practices. The programme will be attended by Maharashtra State Womens Commission member secretary  Shraddha Joshi Sharma, Pune district collector Rajesh Deshmukh, Vikram Kumar, PMC commissioner, Zilla Parishad CEO Ayush Prasad, Pune City Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta and Pune Rural Police Superintendent Abhinav Deshmukh.
