In a major initiative aimed at helping property owners reclaim their old documents, the Sub-Registrar’s Office in Pune has begun returning original property records registered between 1985 and 2001. The campaign, launched on Friday in the presence of Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, will initially cover 75,000 such documents.

The documents, registered and processed at Haveli Sub-Registrar Offices 1 to 9 during the specified period, number around 1.5 lakh in total. Although the registration and associated formalities were completed years ago, many parties failed to collect the original documents at the time. As a result, the documents remained in government storage, occupying space and delaying routine administrative work.

Given the challenges in storing and safeguarding these old records, and the associated cost of manpower and space, the Sub-District Registrar’s office in Pune city decided to launch this document return drive. The initiative is also part of the Maharashtra government’s 100-day action plan.

As part of the drive, all old documents from Sub-Registrar Offices 1 to 9 were verified. From this, a list of 75,000 documents that can now be returned to rightful parties has been prepared. Santosh Hingane, Sub-District Registrar, confirmed that these documents are ready for handover.

Key Highlights:

  • The list of retrievable documents is now available on the official website of the Department of Registration and Stamps under the “New” section.
  • Updated addresses of all sub-registrar offices and QR codes for their Google Maps locations have also been made available online.
  • Parties listed in the document records must visit the respective office with original receipts and valid ID proof to collect their documents.

Why Are These Original Documents Important?

During the 1985–2001 period, many documents were registered but not signed, annotated, or copied in time. Receiving the original document is a legal right of the registrant. These documents are critical for:

  • Mortgage and loan applications with banks
  • Resale of properties
  • Resolving cooperative housing society ownership records

Authorities have urged all concerned individuals to check the published list and collect their pending documents at the earliest.
