The state forest department has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it will halt all recreational activities at the proposed eco-tourism park in Wanowrie. This decision follows concerns raised over the project’s environmental impact. In an affidavit submitted on July 20, Mahadev Mohite, Deputy Conservator of Forests for Pune, stated that the department would cease all ongoing and planned activities related to the park. Completed works include the removal of gliricidia, planting of tall trees, and the installation of water supply systems, pathways, and storage tanks. However, the department will not proceed with any further development or recreational features in the area.

The NGT’s principal bench took note of allegations concerning tree cutting for the park’s development, highlighted by an article in a local daily on January 12. During a previous hearing on May 22, Mohite had indicated that the department would reassess its recreational plans based on public feedback before moving forward.

Local residents and applicants have voiced objections to the forest department’s 10-year working plan, citing concerns about the park’s impact on Wanowrie. They argue that, despite the working plan’s stipulation that only temporary forest-material structures should be used in reserve forests, concrete constructions such as water tanks and seating areas have been erected since February. Additionally, the affidavit from residents claims that mature gliricidia trees were removed improperly, violating established guidelines and disrupting the area’s biodiversity.

The Wanowrie forest reserve, known for its small woodland ecosystem, has faced criticism for the ecological damage caused by these activities. The forest department’s commitment to halting further development aims to address these environmental concerns and adhere to regulatory guidelines.
