In a dramatic turn of events, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Monday, amid escalating civil unrest that has resulted in nearly 200 deaths. The Bangladesh Army Chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, confirmed Hasina’s resignation and announced that the military will now oversee an interim government.

In a televised address, General Waker-Uz-Zaman urged protesters, who had stormed the Prime Minister’s residence, to refrain from violence.

Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, arrived in Tripura via military helicopter and may potentially relocate to another country. This development follows a day of intense clashes that claimed nearly 100 lives, as protesters and supporters of the ruling party clashed across various regions.

Earlier today, demonstrators had called for a “Long March to Dhaka,” signaling a potential escalation in tensions in the capital. Recent days have seen numerous fatalities from clashes between police and student protesters advocating for an end to a controversial quota system that allocates 30 percent of government jobs to relatives of veterans from the 1971 War of Independence. Over 11,000 individuals have been detained.
