In another dumper-related accident, a woman loses her life on the Pune-Nagar Highway

A fatal accident on the Pune-Nagar Highway claimed the life of 32-year-old Sirichandana Vishwanath Hevtam, while her husband, Vishwanath, was injured. The tragic incident took place around 10 AM on Sunday, October 6, when a speeding dumper hit their two-wheeler near Chitale Sweet Home.

The couple had gone to play badminton with friends in the Biff Road area that morning and were returning home when the accident occurred. The dumper struck their bike with such force that Sirichandana, who was seated on the back, was thrown off and crushed under the wheels. Her husband was also thrown from the bike but managed to survive with injuries. The dumper driver fled the scene after the accident, leaving Sirichandana dead on the spot.

The police arrived shortly after and transported Sirichandana’s body to Sassoon Hospital for postmortem. The accident caused a major traffic jam on the Pune-Nagar Highway as stunned onlookers gathered at the site. This incident marks the second fatality in just 12 days due to dumper-related accidents on the highway, with increasing concerns over the illegal heavy vehicle traffic during restricted hours.

Heavy vehicles are prohibited on the city roads between 7 AM and 11 AM and 5 PM to 9 PM. However, violations are rampant, leading to such tragic consequences. Just days before, traffic officials had reinforced the restrictions on heavy vehicles but the dumper involved in Sunday’s accident was operating illegally during these restricted hours.
