A 48-year-old technology professional from Pune’s Bhosari area died by suicide at his residence earlier this month, triggering a police investigation into allegations of workplace harassment, personal disputes and prolonged mental distress.

According to police, a suicide note recovered from the residence allegedly named two female colleagues and a family acquaintance. Based on the note and a complaint filed by the victim’s family, a case has been registered under provisions related to abetment of suicide.

Family Alleges Workplace Humiliation And Denial Of Leave

According to the complaint, the victim allegedly faced repeated humiliation at work. Family members claimed that important projects were reassigned, his work responsibilities were altered and he was allegedly criticised in front of colleagues.

The complaint further alleges that he struggled to obtain leave during a difficult period when his wife was dealing with a chronic illness and the family was coping with bereavement.

Police said the victim had reportedly discussed several of these concerns with family members before his death.

Personal Dispute Also Under Investigation

Investigators are also examining allegations involving a family acquaintance with whom the victim and his wife had reportedly been in contact through social media.

According to the complaint, the relationship later deteriorated, leading to disputes that allegedly involved legal notices, police complaints and email communications. Family members have claimed that these developments added to the stress the victim was already experiencing.

Police are investigating whether the personal dispute had any connection to the circumstances leading up to the incident.

No Arrests Yet, Statements Being Recorded

Officials said statements of family members, colleagues and other relevant individuals are being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have not made any arrests so far and have stated that all allegations are being examined carefully. Investigators are also expected to review workplace records, internal communications and other evidence that may help establish the sequence of events.

Company Extends Condolences, Assures Cooperation

The IT company where the victim was employed has expressed condolences to the bereaved family and stated that employee wellbeing remains a priority.

In its statement, the company said it is extending full cooperation to investigating authorities and is reviewing the allegations made against the employees named in the complaint.

The company also reiterated its commitment to maintaining a respectful, supportive and inclusive workplace while refraining from detailed comments due to the ongoing investigation.

The case has once again brought attention to conversations around workplace wellbeing, employee grievance mechanisms and mental health support systems.

Human resource experts note that while high-pressure work environments can create stress, organisations are increasingly being encouraged to strengthen counselling support, grievance redressal systems and employee assistance programmes to help workers navigate professional and personal challenges.

Recognising Signs Of Work-Related Mental Strain

Mental health professionals often advise people to seek support if they notice persistent warning signs such as:

Emotional signs: Irritability, loss of confidence, withdrawal from social interaction, hopelessness or mood swings.

Cognitive signs: Difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, indecisiveness and reduced productivity.

Physical signs: Chronic fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, disrupted sleep and unexplained exhaustion.

Steps Experts Recommend

Professionals suggest several practical measures to reduce workplace stress:

  • Establish clear work-life boundaries and avoid remaining constantly connected to work communications.
  • Take short breaks during the workday to reset mentally and physically.
  • Identify stress triggers and create a personal wellbeing plan.
  • Speak with managers regarding workload concerns.
  • Reach out to HR teams, counsellors or employee assistance programmes when support is needed.
  • Stay connected with trusted family members, friends or support networks during difficult periods.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have said further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the inquiry.
