Pune – Mangesh Harishchandra Milawane, a firefighter with 17 years of service, including the last two years as a lead firefighter at the Pune Fire Department of Pune Municipal Corporation, is being praised by his colleagues for his heroic efforts during two incidents that occurred on his day off.

On October 8, 2024, Milawane, who was enjoying his weekly day off, returned to his home at Narpatgiri Chowk with his son after picking him up from school. Upon arriving, he was informed by the building’s security guard that nine women and six men were stuck in an elevator between the ground and first floors. Without hesitation, Milawane turned off the main switch, retrieved the elevator key, and manually opened the doors to rescue all 15 people safely. It was later determined that the elevator had malfunctioned due to overcrowding.

In another incident, about an hour later, around 7:30 PM, Milawane received a call from his friend, Nitin Salunkhe, who informed him that a gas cylinder had caught fire at Sassoon Quarters near Pune Station. While advising Salunkhe on immediate safety measures, Milawane rushed to the scene. With the help of nearby residents, he extinguished the fire and averted a potential disaster. The residents, including a doctor’s family living in the quarters, expressed their gratitude for Milawane’s prompt and efficient response.

Reflecting on the day’s events, Milawane said, “I remembered my father’s words, who also served as a fire officer: duty comes first. Our team is always ready and vigilant. I’m just satisfied that I could fulfill my duty.”
