Children of Single Mothers to Get Special Admission Consideration Under Maharashtra’s New Policy
Pune, 16 June, 2026: Maharashtra is planning a separate admission category for children of single mothers to simplify documentation and improve access to education.
According to state officials, the proposed policy seeks to simplify the admission process for children whose mothers are their sole caregivers. The initiative is expected to benefit women who are divorced, separated, widowed, or otherwise raising children without support from a spouse.

Authorities said many single mothers encounter difficulties during school and college admissions because institutions often require a father’s name or related documentation. Under the proposed framework, schools would create a dedicated admission category that could reduce the need for such documents when they are unavailable.
The state government believes the measure will help ensure that children are not denied educational opportunities due to administrative or documentation-related hurdles.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil recently chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the implementation of the proposal. Following the meeting, officials indicated that the government is exploring ways to extend the policy beyond schools to higher education institutions as well.
Patil said discussions are also being held with educational institutions to understand ground-level challenges and develop a streamlined admission process. A virtual meeting with principals of approximately 1,500 colleges has been scheduled to review registration procedures and assess how the proposed system can be implemented effectively.
Officials said the policy is intended to make the education system more inclusive by addressing long-standing concerns raised by single mothers during the admission process. If approved, the new category could be introduced across educational institutions in the state in the coming months.
