Weather Update: Unseasonable Warmth Grips Pune: Night Temperatures Soar To 10-Year High
The city is witnessing an unprecedented rise in night temperatures, with the mercury touching a 10-year high of 23.3°C on Thursday. This surpasses the previous record set earlier this month on October 3, which stood at 23.2°C. On Friday, the minimum temperature hovered around 23.2°C, providing little respite to residents.
This unusual warmth is not limited to Pune alone, as night temperatures across Maharashtra are hovering 1-5 degrees above normal. Several locations in the state have reported minimum temperatures ranging between 22-25°C.
According to meteorological experts, the surge in humidity levels can be attributed to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. “The recent thunderstorms haven’t brought any relief,” said a resident of pune. “The weather remains uncomfortably hot and humid even during night, which is unusual for late October in Pune.”
Weather experts indicate that these conditions, including partly cloudy skies, are likely to persist until October 23. However, dry air from north India is expected to penetrate the state, potentially dropping minimum temperatures below 20°C in some parts.
According to the IMD, the rise in night temperatures to nocturnal cloud cover and moisture incursion via easterly winds. The systems developing over the Bay of Bengal can trigger rainfall in south peninsular India, leading to moisture incursion into Maharashtra.
A new low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the central Bay of Bengal around October 22. However, current forecasts suggest it might not impact Maharashtra.
As Pune waits for relief from the unseasonable warmth, residents continue to endure uncomfortable nights, forcing many to rely on air-conditioning even during this typically pleasant time of year.
